Applied Data Science

Dr. Hand and Dr. Ania Panorska (Department of Mathematics and Statistics) are developing an Applied Data Science Graduate Certificate at UNR, an interdisciplinary program housed under the UNR Graduate School. The ADS Grad Certificate will consist of four courses:

  • DATA 601 - Computational Thinking

  • DATA 602 - Statistical Thinking

  • DATA 720 - Data Science I

  • DATA 721 - Data Science II

The development of DATA 601 and DATA 602 are a part of NASA Space Grant Consortium 80NSSC20M0043, "Applied Data Science for graduate students and the Northern Nevada community," 08/2024 - 06/2025. PI: Dr. Ania Panorska, Co-PI: Dr. Emily Hand.

Teaching resources for DATA 601 and DATA 602 are provided below in order to make the content more accessible and increase data science literacy nationwide.

DATA 601
Computational Thinking

DATA 601 is a course designed to introduce the basics of computational thinking to researchers from a variety of non-computing fields.

The course provides an overview of essential computing concepts and allows for customization with its modular style. Graduate students will work in teams to engage with their new computational thinking skills to solve real-world problems in their disciplines.

Instructor and student resources are available on our Applied Data Science Graduate Certificate Github.

DATA 602 is designed to introduce graduate students from a variety of backgrounds to statistical thinking in order for them to successfully utilize these skills in their research.

Similarly to DATA 601, the course is designed in a modular fashion, allowing for customization based on instructor preference as well as student expertise. Students will work in teams to apply their new statistical thinking skills to real-world research problems in their disciplines.
